Search Tips
Tips for Magazine, Business and Farm Publication Searches
- You may search by TITLE, SRDS or CARD, but not by combinations of the three.
- The text box next to each selection is functional only for that specific category. If you attempt to mix your selection incorrectly, the program will not execute your search.
- If you can't find the title you're looking for, try broadening your search by using fewer search words. For example, if your request does not recognize and retrieve "Magazine-The Monthly", try "Magazine" and the search will retrieve all entries containing that word ... including the entry you're looking for.
- In the United States, SRDS provides comprehensive listings of periodicals by market classifications (i.e., fishing & hunting, photography, automotive, etc.) in separate volumes for Business Publications and Consumer Magazines. The Canadian market is represented by a similar publication known as CARD.
Tips for Newspaper Searches
- You may search for a specific newspaper by its city of publication or you may search for all publications within a specific state.
- If you do not know the exact city of publication, you can broaden your search by selecting the entire state. The program will return to you a list of all publications within a selected state.
- You can not search on more than one state at a time.
- In the United States, the circulation reported is the Average Total Paid Circulation for a six month period.
- In Canada, the circulation reported is Total Distribution represented by the addition of:
- Paid Circulation sold at 50% or more of basic price
- Paid Circulation sold at less than 50% of basic price
- Bulk Circulation
- Non-Paid Circulation
Refer to the Publisher's Statement for more information.
General Tips
- Each search will retrieve up to 50 publications per page.
- If you leave your computer for more than a few minutes, the application will automatically time-out. You will need to restart your search.
- To speed your search, try to avoid punctuation such as commas, apostrophes, periods, etc. with your search word. Some publication titles, however, include this punctuation.
- Retrieved data is excerpted from each publication's Publisher's Statement and the data is subject to confirmation by regularly scheduled audits. ABC publisher members file two Publisher's Statements each year, covering six month periods. For more specific information to enhance your circulation analysis, refer to the corresponding copy of ABC's FAS-FAX or the Publisher's Statement itself.
